Gandan Monastery
Gandantegchilen Khiid is the full name of the monastery. It was started to be built in 1809 and the today’s Gandantegchilen Khiid was built in 1838, by the order of 5th Bogd Javzandamba Khutugt. The first temple was the Gungaachoilin Datsan. The 13th Dalai Lama stayed in the residence in 1904. The 26.5 meters high copper Statue of the Avalokiteśvara was built in 1911 by the order of the 8th Bogd Jevjvndamba Khutagt. During the Great Repression the monastery was closed, the statue of the Avalokitesvara was taken by Russians to Soviet Russia in 1938. With the end of Marxism in Mongolia, restrictions on worship were lifted and the statue of Avalokitesvara was rebuilt by the Mongolians' donation in 1996.
